What Is The YSI?

The YSI (Young Scots For Independence) is a youth organisation set up to campaign for Scottish Independence through the Scottish National Party (SNP). It is independent of, though affiliated to, the SNP. This means YSI policy can sometimes differ from that of the SNP - an internal democracy which the Nationalist movement can be proud of.

The YSI's Story

The YSI has been around for over twenty years now, with most of its life spent as 'Young Scottish Nationalists' (YSN). However, in 1996, the YSN underwent a complete reorganisation and emerged as 'Young Scots for Independence', with the added mandate of providing a social and political forum for the youth of Scotland. This extra aim was first realised at the YSI conference that year, where many lively debates were provoked by the invited guest speakers. Past members of YSN/YSI that are now in prominent positions in the SNP include the former National Convener, John Swinney, and Shadow Cabinet Member, Fiona Hyslop.

What say do you have?

As part of the YSI, you will have the ability to vocally campaign on the streets and in the press on important matters. It is worth noting that the SNP gives greater influence to its youth wing than any other major political party in Scotland. This indicates the power of YSI to affect SNP policy, as well as set and promote its own.

Organisation

The internal organisation of YSI is very flexible - where there is a concentration of active members in one geographical area they form branches, as well as engaging in national campaigning. Individual members who are not part of branches can and do become involved though participating on a more national scale.

How can I get involved?

Anyone who is under 26 and not a member of a political party other than the SNP can join the YSI. The membership subscription is just £2 per year if you are unwaged and £3 per year if you are waged. If you would like to join YSI, then send the subscription via a method outlined on the membership page. If you would simply like more information, please don't hesitate to contact us.
